What are some key differences between double glazed argon filled skylights (Velux) and acrylic dome skylights?


1. Thermal insulation: Double glazed skylights offer better thermal insulation due to the two glass panels separated by a layer of air or gas, which reduces heat transfer and prevents energy loss. On the other hand, acrylic dome skylights have a lower insulation value because they are made of a single layer of plastic.


2. Durability: Acrylic dome skylights are highly durable and resistant to impacts, weathering, and UV radiation, but are known to be more prone to cracking or breaking due to thermal stress or hailstorm. Double glazed skylights 'Velux' have been hail tested and hands down They have a longer lifespan compared to acrylic domes. Double glazed skylights have also been passed for 'BAL 40' bush fire prone areas  


3. Clarity: Double glazed skylights provide clearer visual transmission of natural light, without distortion or yellowing, due to the high-quality glass used. Acrylic dome skylights have a lower light transmission and can yellow over time, affecting the quality of indoor lighting.


4. Maintenance: Acrylic dome skylights are easy to clean and maintain, needing only washing with water and mild detergent. Double glazed skylights require more frequent cleaning, particularly the outer glass pane, which can accumulate dirt and debris, affecting its performance.


5. Cost: Acrylic dome skylights are more affordable than double glazed skylights, as they are made of cheaper materials and require less installation time and labor. Double glazed skylights are more expensive but offer higher energy savings and aesthetic appeal.
